Here at Pete’s we start our onions, from seed in the middle of February, in our production greenhouse. When they are big enough and weather is warm enough, out the go…rows and rows…we plant approximately 60,000 onions per season. some we harvest in early spring to be used as scallions or “Spring Onions” and the rest we wait to harvest until the end of June. We ‘cure’ them in our barn until the develop a thicker skin, at which point then are sweet and can be and ready to be used in your favorite meal.
We grow primarily ‘candy’ onions, most of them a yellow onion and some red, but rest assured then are as sweet and delicious as them come..
HOW DO ONIONS GROW?:
Onion bulbs grow underground and the green tops are above ground.
